The Como Opera Guild is a professional, non-profit, performing arts company dedicated to two main goals. The first goal is to bring the joy and beauty of opera and musical theatre to the children and populace of Northwest Mississippi. The second goal is to provide performance and production opportunities for young artists in our area, with the hope that we will help them to build their resumes in a professional yet supportive learning environment. To reach these goals, we offer free performances for the children of public and private schools as well as the after school programs like Boys and Girls Club, Boy and Girl Scouts, Home schooled children and others. We also perform for the general public at least one performance per production. At this point in our development, all performances are in English with piano accompaniment. Our recent tour production of “Little Red Riding Hood” was the first opportunity for many children in the area to see their first opera. We played to over 1000 children in the public and private schools as well as the Boys and Girls Clubs. In addition to workshops, prior to the shows, we work with the local arts commissions to provide ongoing educational programs.
In the last 3½ years we have:
All our performers and production staff are paid. Performing artists with few exceptions, are contracted on a per performance basis, with an added travel stipend to offset the cost of driving to and from rehearsals and performances. Production staffs are contracted on a per show basis. Como, MS is a small town about 40 miles due south of Memphis off of Interstate 55. We perform our operas in a five county area; Panola, Tate, Lafayette, Tunica, and Desoto. We perform in schools, churches, and restaurants, and on occasion, outdoors. |
